We are planning more great Balmoral events in the coming months. The Community Events Committee welcomes new members, new ideas and neighbors who are willing to lead an event. Please feel free to contact any of the committee members listed if you are interested in helping out.

2008 Clifton Antique Car Show & Festival - Labor Day Monday Sept. 1

Join the Clifton Lions Club for its annual Antique Car Show and Chili Cook Off. Starting at 9am on Main Street in historic Clifton, almost 400 antique cars, vendors, food booths and chili will consume the Monday Federal Holiday. The collcetion of Corvettes is among the largest display in teh DC region. A great outing for young and old.

VDOT Road Work in Balmoral

The Communications Committee reports that residents received notice on July 16, 2008 from VDOT announcing road work to be done this week. This will mark the second time in the past month that VDOT has done work in our neighborhood.

VDOT's notice states that cetain streets in Balmoral are "scheduled for a coat of slurry seal as a maintenance method. Slurry seal is a water-based asphalt and stone mixture that is spread over the street surface. It protects streets from water damage, can help prevent potholes and improve skid resistance, and it provides a quick and economical maintenance method."

Weather permitting, VDOT will begin work on Tuesday July 17 and finish on Monday July 21.

NO PARKING signs will be posted listing times and dates appropriate to the work for a respective block, and signs will be removed by VDOT once the work is complete and the new surface has dried. VDOT reminds us to "Please avoid driving or parking on our street until NO PARKING signs have been removed."

If you ever see a crime in progress, of course you call 911. If you have a non-emergency issue in Fairfax County, call 703/691-2131. This could include a possible scammer going door-to-door, a tree that has fallen into the street, or a animal in distress.

Possible Scams in Balmoral - See Neighborhood Safety

Balmoral remains a very safe neighborhood - but no place is perfect...There have been two recent incidents of possible door-to-door scams posing as fundraisers.

Second Possible Scam - July 2008

It appears that our door-to-door higher-education fundraisers may be back at work in Balmoral. You might recall the issue last month that the Crosiers and several other neighbors experienced with what the police thought were scammers.

Paramjeet and Kammy Sanghera live at 7000 Balmoral Forest Rd, just beside the Ivakota Marker. Tonight, they had a similar incident to what occurred a couple of weeks ago.

At 7:30 pm today, a man came to their house and introduced himself as "James Love." He was carrying some home-made brochures about a higher education program for which he was trying to collect $ 20,000. He named some of our neighbors who he had already visited.

Kammy was curious to know which university this program was at. The person first stated he was transferring from Phoenix University to NOVA and then said he was transferring his credits to George Mason University. Kammy teaches at GMU and is very familiar with the programs at NOVA and GMU. When she asked for more details about the program, department, professors, etc., the person had no answers. He left at that point stating that he would bring a package for her with all the details.

The Sangheras requested that the Communications Committee share this information with the rest of the community. We appreciate their diligent interests on everyone's behalf.
